BIRTH SEARCH INFORMATION

Mississippi Children's Home Services provides several services in regards to birth searches.

If you were adopted through our agency (from 1912 on), we can provide you with non- identifying social or medical information, or both, regarding your birth family.  The fee for this service is $75.00 for social, $25.00 for medical or $100.00 for both.

If you are interested in current medical information and/or meeting your birth parent, a full scale search can be done to locate them.  If you desire a search be done for medical and social information, but do not want to initiate direct contact with your birth parent, this can be specified.  The fee for this service is $250.00.

In order for a search to be done, the Mississippi Adoption Confidentiality Act requires that adoptees interested in uniting with the birth parent undergo a post-adoption counseling session by a licensed adoption agency.  During this couseling session, the adoptee must explore the reason for their request, their expectation, and how they will be effected if the birth parent refuses to allow contact or provide updated medical information.  You may choose another therapist through a licensed adoption agency that is closer to you to conduct the post-adoption counseling, if our agency is not as convenient.  Please have their written report forwarded to the agency.

Under the Mississippi Adoption Confidentiality Act, birth parents can sign an affidavit permitting or prohibiting contact.  Because this law passed in 1993, not many birth parents are aware of this option.  We hope that this web site will make that information more accessible.

If you would like to pursue this matter, please complete the birth search request form and indicate which service you are requesting.  You are also required to submit a copy of your driver's license and birth certificate to verify that you are indeed the adoptee.  Payment in full will need to be remitted.
