Our Coming Full Circle Capital Campaign has met with much success in a very difficult economic climate. To date we have raised over $4.6 million of our $6 million goal. This includes $460,000 from the Kresge Foundation as part of a Challenge Grant which led to over $1.5 million in contributions in the last half of 2009 alone.
As we work to raise the funds necessary to complete the campaign, we seek your financial support which will allow us the opportunity to expand our ability to serve Mississippi’s most needy children.
Statistics show that Mississippi’s prevalence of serious emotional disturbance in children and adolescents (age 9 to 17) is between 11 and 13 percent, or at our existing population, between 42,394 and 50,102 children. With only a combined 298 licensed/COM (certificate of need) Approved Beds in Mississippi increasing the number of licensed beds is essential in meeting the need for mental health services in our state.
MCHS CARES Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF), as the only Mississippi non-profit Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility and only Mississippi-based corporation providing these services, in continuing our commitment to serve children in need by creating safe, quality environments staffed by highly-trained professionals.
The “Coming Full Circle Capital Campaign” was created to develop three ten-bed residential cottages for the children in our care and a 60-student Arts and Education Center for children aged 6-12 who are in our care or in the community, but unable to succeed in their local schools. Now part of our Jean Austin Bagley Campus, the cottages and school are fulfilling their intended purpose and preparing children to succeed in healthy, caring family environments.
The new campus has made a tremendous impact of the lives of Mississippi children and our ability to serve their needs. The three cottages allow the children living there to interact with each other and Mississippi Children’s Home Society’s staff in a family home setting. This purposeful design prepares the youth to function in their own family environment upon their discharge. The Arts and Education Center provides modern classroom facilities as well as art and music rooms so important in reaching out to children in need of this type of care.
Mississippi Children’s Home Services believes in creating lasting, loving, nurturing homes for Mississippi children. The measurable improvement in these children’s ability to make good choices, live in a healthy, supportive home environment, while making progress in their education will have a long-lasting impact on their ability to contribute to their communities.
On behalf of our Board of Directors, staff and most importantly, the thousands of children throughout Mississippi who will have access to Mississippi Children’s Home Services’ facilities and programs as a result of your support, we thank you for your thoughtful consideration.
Campaign Goal for Phase 1: $6 Million
Phase 1 of our campus will include:
THREE COTTAGES affording the most secure, nurturing and homelike environment possible for children.
An ARTS AND EDUCATION FACILITY with up-to-date classrooms and space for enrichment and support, including art and music therapy as well as vocation training.
The cost of Phase 1 will be $7.16 million, $6 million of which will be funded by charitable gifts secured through our Capital Campaign. This is an exciting time for our agency, but we know that it will require hard work, detailed plans, involvement by the community and many generous donors from around our State to make this dream come true.
